Level 1 EV charging plugs into a standard 120V outlet and adds roughly 4 miles of range per hour. Sufficient for under-40-mile daily commutes. Level 2 EV charging requires a 240V circuit and adds 25 miles of range per hour. Necessary for over-40-mile daily commutes or multi-EV households. Level 2 install cost: $1,500 to $3,500. The IRA 30C credit covers 30 percent of cost up to $1,000 through 2032 in low-income or rural census tracts.

Match charger to commute

Daily under 40 miles: L1 sufficient. Plug in overnight; full charge by morning. No install cost. Existing 120V outlet works.

Daily 40 to 100 miles: L2 recommended. Faster charge ensures full battery by morning even on long-commute days.

Multi-EV households or over-100-mile daily: L2 required. L1 cannot keep up with multi-vehicle or high-mileage loads.

L2 install cost stack

EVSE hardware (Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, JuiceBox): $500 to $1,200. Existing 240V outlet near garage: $0 install. New 240V circuit and outlet: $1,000 to $2,000.

Total typical install: $1,500 to $3,500. IRA 30C covers 30 percent up to $1,000 in eligible census tracts. Some utilities offer additional $250 to $500 rebates.
