NOAA Climate Prediction Center outlook for winter 2026-27 leans cold across the eastern and midwestern US, raising polar-vortex risk. Prep before December: lock the supply rate August through October, weatherize attic + rim joist, set water heater to 120 F, replace 80 AFUE furnace if over 18 years old. Estimated combined savings on a typical winter heating bill if all 8 steps completed: $340 to $580.

The 8-step prep checklist

Steps 1-4: lock supply rate, weatherize attic, weatherize rim joists, set water heater to 120F. These are zero-capex moves with immediate payback.

Steps 5-8: replace 80 AFUE furnace, install programmable thermostat, audit phantom loads, install smart power strips. Combined estimated savings $340 to $580 per heating season.

Which states most exposed

Cold-climate northeast (NY, PA, MA, ME) and upper midwest (MI, WI, MN, ND) feel polar-vortex events most directly.

Mid-Atlantic (NJ, MD, VA) less exposed but still sees 15 to 25 percent winter bill premiums during deep cold events.

Common questions

Quick answers from the editorial desk

When does polar vortex hit?
Typically mid-December to early February. The December 2025 event hit December 14 to 21. Forecasts give 7 to 14 days warning.
Which states are most exposed?
Cold-climate northeast, upper midwest, and parts of the mid-Atlantic. Texas Panhandle and Plains states also exposed to extreme cold during polar vortex events.
Heat pump in vortex?
Cold-climate heat pumps (CCHP-certified) work down to -15F. Standard heat pumps need backup heat below 20F. Dual-fuel systems work best in polar-vortex-prone zones.
Lock now or wait?
Lock by October. Polar-vortex risk has not yet priced into October forward curves. November-December locks price the spike into the contract.
