The Texas Panhandle (Amarillo, Lubbock, surrounding) is climate zone 8 — the only zone-8 territory in the contiguous lower 48 with temperatures regularly dropping below zero F. Atmos Energy delivers natural gas to most Panhandle homes. Winter gas bills typically run $190 to $260 in January. Texas allows residential gas-supplier choice through Atmos; locked supplier rates typically come in 10 to 18 percent below the Atmos default.
Why the Panhandle is climate zone 8
The Texas Panhandle high-plains terrain (3,200 to 4,200 feet elevation) and lack of mountain barriers allow Canadian cold air masses to push south unimpeded. Winter low temperatures regularly drop to -10 F to -22 F.
Climate zone 8 is the harshest US heating climate zone. Only Alaska and a few mountain peaks in the lower 48 reach colder. The Panhandle gets the most heating-degree-days of any continental US territory outside of the upper Midwest.
Atmos Energy Panhandle territory
Atmos Energy delivers natural gas to Amarillo, Lubbock, Plainview, Pampa, and most Panhandle towns. Atmos default service runs $0.78 to $0.92 per CCF depending on quarter.
Texas allows residential gas-supplier choice through Atmos. The Atmos Energy Gas Choice program lists certified suppliers. Locked rates typically come in 10 to 18 percent below the Atmos default.
Panhandle winter heating strategy
Lock the gas supply rate in August through October. Captures the pre-winter curve. Upgrade gas furnace AFUE from 80 to 95+ if older than 18 years. Weatherize aggressively given the extreme cold.
Propane fall-back: some rural Panhandle homes use propane for backup when gas pipeline pressure drops during deep-cold events. Propane runs roughly 2x the per-BTU cost of natural gas. Use only as emergency backup, not primary heat.
Lock the rate before the next reset.
Seenra runs the supplier shortlist in 5 minutes. No credit pull, no on-site visit, no service interruption. Forever free for households.
