New Jersey BPU certifies 50+ Third Party Suppliers (TPS) for both electricity and natural gas. Four electric utilities deliver: PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric, Orange & Rockland. NJ residents can switch TPS for either fuel through the BPU shopping site. The switch is paperwork only; service quality and delivery are unchanged. Locked supplier rates typically save 8 to 16 percent vs the utility default.

NJ four electric utilities

PSE&G (Public Service Electric and Gas) is the largest, serving most of central and northern NJ including Newark, Elizabeth, New Brunswick. JCP&L (Jersey Central Power & Light) serves northwest and central-west NJ including Morristown.

Atlantic City Electric serves southern NJ including Atlantic City, Cape May, and surrounding counties. Orange & Rockland serves a small portion of northern Bergen County (overlapping NY territory).

TPS certification and the BPU process

The NJ BPU certifies Third Party Suppliers through a process requiring financial bonds, marketing compliance, contract review, and customer-service standards. 50+ TPS are currently certified across NJ.

The BPU operates a shopping site (NJEnergyShopper.com) that lists current TPS offers for each utility. The site is updated weekly with current pricing.

Typical savings and lock strategy

Locked supplier rates typically save 8 to 16 percent vs the utility default across all four NJ utilities. The lock window opens August through October.

Sort the BPU shopping site by 12-month locked rate. Pick a clean offer (no teaser, $0 to $50 cancellation fee). Most reputable TPS ship clean 18 to 24 month contracts.

Lock the rate before the next reset.

Common questions

Quick answers from the editorial desk

Who certifies TPS in New Jersey?
The NJ Board of Public Utilities (BPU). Certification requires financial bonds, marketing compliance, contract review, and customer-service standards. The BPU removes TPS from the marketplace if certification is revoked.
Are there NJ rate freezes that affect supplier shopping?
No active rate freezes as of 2026. PSE&G and the other utilities operate under normal regulated tariffs. The supplier choice marketplace is fully open and active.
Can I run gas aggregation in NJ?
Yes in some municipalities. The Community Energy Aggregation Program (CEAP) is the NJ equivalent of Ohio NOPEC. Some NJ towns aggregate residential gas and electric supply contracts. Check with your local government.
What are typical cancellation fees on NJ TPS contracts?
$50 to $200. Reputable TPS ship $0 to $50 fees. Higher fees are typically associated with teaser or promotional contracts. Confirm the fee in writing before signing.
