FirstEnergy serves Akron (Ohio Edison) and Canton (Ohio Edison + Toledo Edison). Renters in these markets can switch suppliers without landlord approval as long as the meter is in their name. The renter-friendly 4-step switch path works whether you are in a single-family rental, an apartment, or a condo. Estimated savings vs FirstEnergy SSO: 8 to 14 percent on a clean 12-month lock.
Who can switch as a renter
Renters with the electricity meter in their own name can switch suppliers without landlord approval. The supplier contract is between the resident and the supplier; the landlord is not involved.
Renters with electricity included in rent (meter in landlord's name) cannot switch directly. The landlord controls supplier choice. Some landlords are open to discussing the choice; most are not. Confirm meter ownership before pursuing.
The renter-friendly 4-step switch
Step 1: confirm the meter is in your name (check your most recent FirstEnergy bill for account holder). Step 2: pick a PUCO-certified CRES supplier and a contract length matching your lease (12 months for most renters).
Step 3: sign electronically through PUCO Apples-to-Apples or the supplier's site. Step 4: retain the contract paperwork for move-out so you can either transfer or cancel cleanly.
Move-out and contract handling
When you move within FirstEnergy territory, you can usually transfer the supplier contract to the new address. When you move out of FirstEnergy territory or out of Ohio, you cancel the contract at your old address. Most reputable suppliers waive the cancellation fee in a verified move scenario.
Confirm the move-out clause in the contract before signing. Suppliers without a clean move-out clause should be avoided by renters.
