Pennsylvania has 7 natural gas utilities. The three largest — Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, UGI Utilities, and Peoples Natural Gas — cover roughly 68 percent of residential customers. Each utility has its own price-to-compare. Supplier choice runs through the PUC; suppliers can sell across multiple gas utilities but must register separately for each. 2026 gas PTCs vary from $0.65 to $0.92 per CCF. Locked rates typically come in 12 to 22 percent below the PTC.

The three largest PA gas utilities

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania serves central and western PA outside of Pittsburgh proper. Largest by customer count. UGI Utilities serves northeast and eastern PA including most of the Lehigh Valley. Peoples Natural Gas serves Pittsburgh and western PA suburbs.

The remaining 4 PA gas utilities (Equitable Gas, National Fuel, Philadelphia Gas Works, Valley Energy) serve specific territories. Each has its own rate filings with the PUC.

Default rate spread across the three

2026 PA gas PTCs: Columbia roughly $0.78 per CCF, UGI roughly $0.84, Peoples roughly $0.92. The spread reflects different procurement costs and pipeline-capacity allocations.

Peoples Pittsburgh runs the highest default because western PA gas demand and pipeline capacity charges run higher. Columbia central PA benefits from proximity to Marcellus shale gas production.

Supplier list size by utility

Columbia: roughly 18 to 25 active suppliers. UGI: roughly 12 to 18. Peoples: roughly 10 to 15. The variation reflects market size and supplier acquisition costs in each territory.

All three utilities accept supplier choice through PaPowerSwitch.com. Locked rates typically come in 12 to 22 percent below the utility default across all three.

Confirm on your most recent gas bill or via PaPowerSwitch.com zip lookup. Columbia serves central + western PA outside Pittsburgh. UGI serves northeast + eastern PA. Peoples serves Pittsburgh + western suburbs. Remaining 4 utilities serve smaller territories.
Are there municipal gas utilities in PA?
Yes, a handful of small municipalities operate their own gas systems (e.g., Philadelphia Gas Works is a municipal utility serving Philadelphia city limits). Municipal utilities typically do not offer supplier choice; customers pay the regulated municipal rate.
Can I run gas aggregation in PA?
Yes, in some municipalities. Gas aggregation is less common than electric aggregation in PA but exists in select communities. Check with your local government energy office for active programs.
What is the typical cancellation fee on PA gas supplier contracts?
$0 to $200. Reputable suppliers ship $0 to $50 fees. Higher fees are typically associated with teaser contracts or longer terms (36+ months). Confirm the fee in writing before signing.
