Four questions to ask every supplier before signing any energy contract: 1) all-in rate including base charge, 2) contract term length, 3) cancellation fee amount, 4) what happens at end of term. If a supplier refuses to answer any of the four in writing before signing, the offer is non-compliant. Walk away. Memorize the four questions and apply them to every offer.

The 4 questions in detail

Q1: What is the all-in rate including any monthly base charge, calculated at my typical kWh usage? Q2: What is the contract term in months?

Q3: What is the cancellation fee in dollars if I leave early? Q4: What happens at end of term — auto-renew, expire to default, or notification window?

Good vs bad answers

Good Q1 answer: 'Effective rate at 1,000 kWh: 9.5 cents per kWh. No base charge.' Bad: 'It depends on usage.' (Vague = walk away.)

Good Q3: '$0 cancellation fee.' Bad: 'We don't usually charge a fee.' (Get it in writing.)

Good Q4: 'Auto-renews at posted rate with 30-day cancellation window.' Bad: 'We'll send you a notice.' (Vague = walk away.)

Common questions

Quick answers from the editorial desk

Ask in writing?
Yes. Email or chat. Save the response. If the rate offered does not match the answer in writing, you have grounds for PUC complaint.
Supplier will not answer?
Walk away. Reputable suppliers answer all 4 questions clearly and in writing. Refusal to answer is itself a red flag.
Utility different questions?
Utility default service is standardized; no negotiation. The 4 questions apply to competitive suppliers only.
Before sign vs after?
Before. After signing, the contract terms apply. Negotiating after is significantly harder.
